News from the Schools

This summer, TAASLPs Public School Committee held its 8th Annual Summer School’s Forum. This years Forum was held in the Rutherford County BOE Teacher Center in Murfreesboro, TN. Twenty SLPs fromlocal counties came out on a very warm summer day to learn some of the basics of Literacy-Based Language Therapy its rationale, its components and how literacy can be used effectively in meeting students language goals. Those attending had an opportunity to analyze some childrens literature for some of the basic linguistic components presented by Sylvia Driggins, MS, CCC-SLP. Paula Laaser, MS, CCC-SLP, demonstrated a literacy-based program that is implemented by the SLPs in the Rutherford County Schools. Read more »


U of M Students Return to the Dominican Republic

Over spring break in March, 2011 six AuD and four MA students from the University of Memphis School of Communication Sciences and Disorders went to the Dominican Republic with three faculty advisors to provide related services to children in facilities there. Read more »


New Department Chair at the University of Tennessee

Dr. Ashley Harkrider has been selected to fill the position of Chair of the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology (ASP). The Department of ASP is in the College of Allied Health Sciences, Health Sciences Center, and is located on the UTK campus. Dr. Harkrider is Associate Professor in the Department of ASP and has been interim department chair since August 2009. Her appointment as permanent chair will begin on July 1, 2011. Read more »
