“Exploring Hot Topics in Ethics”
Abstract:
This presentation explores the ethical considerations surrounding the integration of AI tools,
such as ChatGPT, into professional practice. Participants will gain an understanding of the
ethical challenges associated with AI in practice, such as data privacy, bias, and informed
consent. The session will also highlight key ethical issues reviewed by the American Speech-
Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Board of Ethics, offering insights into best practices for
maintaining professional standards. Additionally, the presentation will address the ethical
responsibilities of professionals when working with culturally and linguistically diverse
populations, emphasizing cultural competence, sensitivity, and ensuring culturally appropriate
care and service delivery.
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize the ethical issues involved with incorporating ChatGPT and other AI into
your practice. - Identify the most common ethical issues reviewed by the ASHA Board of Ethics.
- Describe your ethical responsibilities when working with culturally and linguistically
diverse populations.
Satisfactory Completion:
To be eligible to earn ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) participants must attend the
presentation in full and complete a provided post-course assessment and course evaluation.
Presenter:
Katie Meyer, Esq. is the Senior Director of Ethics at the American-Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA). In this role, she is an ex-officio member of the ASHA Board of Ethics. Prior
to coming to ASHA, she worked as an attorney at GKG Law, P.C. in Washington, D.C. for 20
years providing legal counsel to non-profit and certification organizations and assisted in
creating and maintaining disciplinary and ethics programs.
