“Language Diversity Meets Expertise: Empowering SLPs in Multilingual Settings”
Abstract:
This presentation equips speech-language pathologists with the knowledge and tools to effectively support multilingual clients. Participants will explore foundational concepts of multilingualism, its impact on communication, and the importance of cultural responsiveness. The session addresses common challenges, highlights evidence-based practices, and introduces practical assessment and intervention strategies, and provides a variety of resources. Through an interactive case study, attendees will apply learned concepts and share solutions, empowering SLPs to deliver equitable, culturally responsive care in diverse settings.

- Describe key considerations when working with multilingual populations as SLPs
- Identify evidence-based strategies for assessment and intervention in multilingual settings
- Analyze a case study to develop practical approaches for multilingual clients
- Access and utilize ASHA resources to support their practice in multilingual contexts
Satisfactory Completion:
To be eligible to earn ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) participants must attend the presentation in full and complete a provided post-course assessment and course evaluation.
Presenters:
Linda I. Rosa-Lugo, EdD, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL, ASHA Fellow, is a bilingual speech-language pathologist specializing in supporting multilingual children, individuals with hearing loss, and those facing language and literacy challenges. As a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, she has held pivotal leadership positions at UCF, currently serves as Clinical Associate Faculty at SUNY–Stony Brook and has successfully secured U.S. Department of Education grants. A dedicated ASHA member for over 30 years, she will commence her term as President-Elect in 2025.
Lisa Rai Mabry-Price, MS, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Director of School Services in Speech-Language Pathology at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in Rockville, MD. In her role, she consults with school-based SLPs and consumers on clinical and professional practice issues, develops resources across practice areas, and collaborates with member volunteers. Lisa Rai serves as the ex-officio for ASHA’s Special Interest Group 19, Speech Science, and is a consultant to the Schools Finance Committee. Her clinical background spans school settings, acute care, long-term care, and adult rehabilitation. She is also a member of the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences Hall of Fame.
