On March 18th, 2023, the NSSLHA chapter of Middle Tennessee State University will host the 17th Annual Mid-Tenn Conference featuring Dr. Cari Tellis. The conference, which will be held via Zoom, is entitled “Why Counseling is Important in Speech-Language Pathology and How to do it Effectively.” Dr. Tellis will address the role of counseling in speech-language pathology, provide a model for integrating counseling into assessment and treatment, teach skills necessary for effective counseling especially when addressing strong emotions like grief, shame, and stigma, as well as provide information on how to ameliorate clinician bias to make therapy more individual, equitable and inclusive. The first half of the course will cover an overview of counseling including solution-cycle, five intentions of communications, CI-Matrix, motivation, and responsive listening. Thesecond half will cover the use of counseling in speech-language pathology through case studies, emotional intelligence, compassionate communication, advanced skills, and DEI. If in attendance for the entire conference, you will receive .4 CEUs. We look forward to hosting the conference and hope to see you on Zoom on March 18th!
